Spectral envelope position and shape in sustained musical instrument sounds

چکیده
It has been argued that the relative position of spectral envelopes along frequency axis serves as a cue for musical instrument size (e.g., violin vs viola) and shape envelope encodes family identity (violin flute). is further known fundamental (F0), F0-register specific instruments, dynamic level strongly affect properties acoustical sounds. However, associations between these factors have not rigorously quantified representative set instruments. Here, we analyzed 5640 sounds from 50 sustained orchestral instruments sampled across their entire range F0s at three levels. Regression centroid (SC) values index indicated smaller possessed higher SC majority classes (families), but also correlated with F0 was consistently affected by level. Instrument classification using relatively low-dimensional cepstral audio descriptors allowed discrimination accuracies beyond 80%. Envelope became much less indicative class whenever problem involved generalization to different levels or F0-registers. These analyses confirm encode information about highlight dependence on F0(-register)

Spectral Correlates in Emotion Labeling of Sustained Musical Instrument Tones
Music is one of the strongest inducers of emotion in humans. Melody, rhythm, and harmony provide the primary triggers, but what about timbre? Do the musical instruments have underlying emotional characters? For example, is the well-known melancholy sound of the English horn due to its timbre or to how composers use it? Though music emotion recognition has received a lot of attention, researcher...
متن کاملSpectral modeling of musical sounds
Spectral based analysis/synthesis techniques offer powerful tools for the processing of sounds. They include many different approaches, each one with its own advantages and set of compromises that have to be considered before using any of them for a particular application. In this article we present several complementary spectral representations, techniques to obtain them or generate sound from...
متن کاملEnvelope Model of Isolated Musical Sounds
This paper presents a model of the envelope of the additive parameters of isolated musical sounds, along with a new method for the estimation of the important envelope splitpoint times. The model consists of start, attack, sustain, release, and end segments with variable split-point amplitude and time. The estimation of the times is done using smoothed derivatives of the envelopes. The estimate...
متن کاملAnalysis and resynthesis of musical instrument sounds using energy separation
Energy separation algorithms using Teager's energy operator have been used to analyze modulations in speech resonances, and energy separation in bird song. Here we apply energy separation and the energy operator to the analysis and resynthesis of musical instrument sounds. We show how the energy operator can be used to (a) examine vibrato and tremolo (b) precisely determine frequencies of harmo...
متن کاملDetection of Random Spectral Alterations of Sustained Musical Instrument Tones in Repeated Note Contexts
Eight sustained musical instrument sounds were randomly altered by a time-invariant process to determine how well spectral alteration could be detected on repeated notes. Sounds were resynthesized in a series of eight 0.25-second repeated notes and spectrally altered with average spectral alterations of 8, 16, 24, 32, and 48%. Listeners were asked to discriminate each randomly altered repeated ...
